Good evening everyone! This is Bird’s☆feelings♪.
This time we used drone footage to film the ruins of Hachioji Castle, a castle that fell in one day to a force of 15,000 Toyotomi troops during the Battle of Odawara.
By the way, if you go to the right of the entrance in this photo, you will head towards the remains of the Honmaru citadel, and if you go straight, you will head towards the remains of the Oshuden palace. It’s a really steep climb to get to the remains of the Honmaru citadel.
Battle of Hachioji Castle
The ruins of Hachioji Castle, the site of this battle that took place in the midst of the Sengoku period.
The reason why this castle has become a sad and painful part of history…
The lord of this castle, Hojo Ujiyasu, and his troops rushed to Odawara Castle, and only a few vassals and non-combatants remained inside the castle.
Even so, the castle was built like a fortress, making good use of the terrain, and the desperate resistance of the people inside the castle led to a fierce battle, with many unexpected deaths on the Toyotomi side, but at the end of the battle, the castle fell overnight to the overwhelming force of the Toyotomi army, which had 15,000 soldiers.
I wonder if there was a rule in this era that women and children should not be killed. The women and children who were left behind decided to commit suicide by throwing themselves at Kamitaki Falls, rather than being at the mercy of the Toyotomi army, and their blood stained red for three days and three nights.
Really, Japanese people who live in the present day, not the Sengoku period, should be really grateful. Was the Sengoku period a time when there were many ambitious people?
Actually visiting the ruins of Hachioji Castle
I’ve actually been to the Hachioji Castle ruins over 10 times in the past, and it’s one of my favorite spots in Tokyo. During the Warring States period, the ruins of Hachioji Castle was the site of a brutal deadly battle.
But now it’s been maintained, and the main hall ruins in particular have chairs set up, making it a historic site with a truly tranquil atmosphere, with people taking walks, light hikes, and photographing wild birds. What’s more, the night sky seen from the main hall ruins at night is actually quite soothing (although I definitely don’t recommend going at night).
This is a pull bridge. I can imagine people walking across it at the time.
The water of Goshuden Falls has dried up now. It is said that the women and children who were left behind committed suicide and threw themselves into the river, which turned red for three days and nights. But honestly, even if you jumped from this waterfall today, the drop is so small that you would be injured. Perhaps the topography has changed since then.
This is a memorial monument for the dead. It was a time in Japan that is truly unimaginable today. I must be grateful to be living in this modern, peaceful time.
